Landscaping and Walkways
Design great walkways for your front or backyard:
Is there an area of your
landscaping design that seems to get more foot traffic than other
areas or are
you building a new outdoor lawn feature like a
deck design, a gazebo or
pool landscaping?
If you answered yes to any of these, then you may be in need of a walkway
design. Often, homeowners only think of
walkway designs as a space between the driveway and the front or back
door,
but there are many other places where walkway designs can be added that are
practical and sometimes necessary. Imagine if you have just built a new pool
and
there will be an area of grass that friends and family are constantly
walking
over. The easiest solution is to create a path for those friends and family
to
walk on. This will keep them on that path and away from other parts of the
lawn.
You may also want to add a path to your
landscape plans if you have a shed in the backyard that will
house bikes, lawnmowers, or a wheelbarrow. Creating a path, will allow you
to
easily move these items from the shed to the driveway without ruining the
lawn.
Although a walkway may seem like a difficult task to add to
an already planned landscape, it is actually an easy addition. Every
lawn and garden center has a section totally devoted to walkway designs
that can easily be added to the lawn without having to tear up the entire
lawn
and add new
grass seed and sod to the
lawn. At your local lawn and garden store you will find concrete stepping
stones
of a variety of shapes and sizes as well as paving slabs that can easily be
laid
directly onto the lawn. These can be placed side by side to create a path or
can
be set a few inches apart to create a leap frog design. These concrete
stepping
stones can also be added to
garden design
areas to keep foot traffic away from the mulch and
garden plants. If you have the time and energy, it is probably best to
go
ahead and dig out the area where the stepping stones or paving slabs will
be, to
keep the yard well aerated and to keep weeds from taking over underneath the
foot path. You may also want to consider using black plastic sheeting as
weed control, which will help prevent weeds from creeping up around the
path. Of course, you will need to prepare the plastic sheeting with holes or
some other type of aeration to keep the stepping stones from becoming a
drainage
problem.
If you want a more formal walkway design, then you may want
to consider removing the grass from a section of the lawn and placing
bricks,
wood, concrete where that pathway will exist. Of course this may be a bit
more
time consuming, as you will need to prepare the soil and also add in black
plastic sheeting with
lawn aeration and dethatching,
or some type of pebbles or mulch underneath to prevent any drainage
problems. If
you are unsure of the type of drainage needed for a concrete or brick
pathway,
then you will want to speak to a professional who can offer advice on these
matters.
Remember that you can integrate your walkway design with
the rest of your yard, by incorporating garden plants or
garden flowers as edging for the walkway. The look and style of
successful landscaping ideas for your
walkway truly depends on the amount of time and energy you want to put in to
the
entire project.
